Wraysbury Dragons & Waka Ama Annual Long Distance Race

Glorious Spring sunshine and friendly river conditions welcomed the five dragon boat crews and seven waka ama (outrigger) crews attending the Wraysbury Dragons & Waka Ama annual long distance race. After little racing over the previous few months due to adverse river conditions, the event was  eagerly supported by local dragon boat and outrigger clubs. The crews lined up for the start of the race – 7kms for the dragon boats and 12kms for the waka ama – made for a great sight, notably the waka ama with their wonderful graphics, especially the new Ozone Hydra recently acquired by OCUK.

The perpetual waka ama was won by one of the two Paddlesports crews entered, winning with a very impressive time. The perpetual dragon boat trophy was won by Wraysbury, with Hurricanes finishing second.

All paddlers thoroughly enjoyed the racing, even the Royal Docks waka ama crew that hulied (capsized) at the turn. Hard racing and great camaraderie amongst all the paddlers are what these two wonderful watersports are all about.
